— OUR BACKGROUND

Sheeco Foundations was established with a vision of creating meaningful and sustainable change within communities facing socio-economic challenges. The organisation is based in Mamelodi East, Nellmapius, Gauteng, and works to mobilise communities towards responsible and sustainable development. Our programmes respond to challenges such as poverty, unemployment, limited educational opportunities, vulnerability and inadequate access to essential resources. Sheeco Foundations is registered as a Non-Profit Organisation under NPO Registration Number 297-975. We believe that sustainable community development happens when people are not only supported, but are also equipped to create better opportunities for themselves, their families and their communities.

Sustainable Township Communities Our vision is to see township and disadvantaged communities transformed into self-sustaining, empowered and economically independent communities. We envision communities where young people have access to education, skills and economic opportunities; where children can grow in safe and nurturing environments; where vulnerable families receive meaningful support; and where individuals are empowered to become active contributors to their communities.

Giving Communities the Tools to Eradicate Poverty Our mission is to educate, empower and equip people from historically disadvantaged communities with the tools and opportunities required to improve their lives. We focus particularly on children, youth, women and persons living with disabilities, while working with communities and stakeholders to address poverty, unemployment, limited access to education, health challenges and other social barriers. Our ultimate objective is to help beneficiaries move towards self-reliance, independence and sustainable livelihoods.

Our work is focused on communities experiencing socio-economic challenges, with our primary base in Mamelodi East and Nellmapius, Gauteng. Our community-development work has also extended to areas including Diepsloot, Mabopane, Eersterust and Orange Farm, among other communities and partnerships. Through collaboration and strategic partnerships, our objective is to extend meaningful programmes to more communities across South Africa.

Our long-term goal is not simply to respond to poverty, but to help communities overcome the conditions that keep people trapped in poverty. We therefore place strong emphasis on education, skills development, entrepreneurship, employment opportunities and access to essential services. We believe that when individuals are given the right tools, support and opportunities, they can change their own lives and become agents of positive change within their communities. The name Sheeco Foundations reflects this philosophy: beneficiaries are encouraged not only to receive support, but ultimately to give back and contribute towards positive change in their own communities.

WHY DID WE START NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION

According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), Quarterly Labour Force Survey released on 23 June 2020, the unemployment rate in South Africa has increased to 30,1% in the first quarter of 2020. The youth unemployment rate for those between the ages of 16 and 24 was around 8 percent in early 2017. Typically, teenagers report the highest rates of unemployment. Those in their early 20s are more likely to be working, but their status often depends more on whether they remain in school. Although there are various reasons for youth unemployment vis-à-vis population growth, lack of experience, inappropriate ways of searching for a job and lack of career guidance in schools, the unemployment rate for first-time jobseekers in South Africa is unacceptably high. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a major setback for many households and the young people tend to bear the brunt of economic downturn, suffering greater job losses and higher unemployment rates than adults. Young people often have little or no labour market experience, and frequently lack relevant skills. The geographical isolation of the districts contributes to the high unemployment rate and welfare does not cover even necessary food supplies. As a result, social conditions remain severe and structural poverty is widely distributed in the area. Drug misuse, youth crime, gender violence, school dropouts and children ended up on the street are among typical problems for the community. It is for these reasons SHEECO FOUNDATIONS decided to intervene and to play a positive role and upliftment to the most vulnerable individuals in the community. Social evils, domestic substance abuse, violence, gunfights, which results in shooting and innocent people lost their lives and SHEECO FOUNDATIONS comes in, intervene, and play a positive role in the upliftment of our communities.

Why are donations needed

Families in rural South Africa experience a lot of hardship. Many cannot afford to feed their families, buy school uniform, or pay for transport to register their child’s birth. Kids Who Care uses 100% of all donations to provide families with these basic needs. All of the funds go directly to the families, as there are no overhead or adminstration costs for SHEECO FOUNDATIONS
